A three-pointer from Kies then pushed it to four before Dubuque rattled off five straight points to take a 31-30 halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same with five lead changes over the first four minutes. BVU held a slim 47-42 lead with 12:47 to play before the Spartans went on a 21-4 run over the next five minutes to build their largest lead of the game at 62-51.
BVU, however, slowly chipped away at the lead and got as close as 65-62 with four minutes to go before Dubuque ran off eight straight to back up double-digits.
Buena Vista dips to 7-7 overall (0-3 IIAC) and will remain on the road for a 6:00pm contest at Luther College Wednesday night.
