The City of Storm Lake is moving forward in submitting its Downtown Facade Renovation grant to the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
During this week's city council meeting, City Manager Jim Patrick explained the project would allow owners, in cooperation with the city, to improve the front exteriors of historic downtown buildings.
In the past, IEDA has awarded $500,000 for projects, with building owners and cities responsible for providing matching funds.
Grant writers Simmering-Cory, a Clear Lake-based company who has successfully written and administered over 400 Community Development Block Grants, are currently developing the City's application. An architectural firm is putting together a building analysis and cost estimates.
"We're looking at the first steps in the downtown renovation process," Patrick said. "We have talked to several business owners and banks to help with financing---there's some excitement there."
So far, Patrick said 21 owners are interested in the project.
The next step in the process will be architectural renderings, estimates and initial commitments.
