Children take part in service projects for Martin Luther King Day

Monday, January 14, 2013

During the last three years, Storm Lake Schools have participated in community observances of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and last year went further to complete a service project - assembling approximately 2,000 bags of packaged meals to donate to Upper Des Moines Opportunity, The Bridge and the Lord's Pantry oin Alta. It was estimated that around 1,000 families were recipients of this food which was distributed in Storm Lake and Alta.

They are looking in 2013 to double the amount of packages that will be assembled and made available for distribution in Buena Vista County with an estimated 20,000 meals.

On Friday, Jan. 18, students at Storm Lake Elementary, Middle School and High School will be involved in activities to commemorate MLK Day of Service. In the morning third and fourth grade students from Storm Lake Elementary and students in grades 5-8 will assemble 2,000 bags of packaged meal at Storm Lake Middle School. Other elementary students will be involved in making placemats for area nursing and assisted living facilities, making cards for PIE partners and in cooperative reading activities with high school students. In the afternoon, all students at Storm Lake High School will also be assembling 2000 bags of meals and sophomore students will be involved in activities with students at the elementary.
