Gary Widman, age 56, of Storm Lake, died Jan. 4, 2013 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after his courageous battle with cancer. He battled it for 12 years, and was proud to walk in the Relay for Life for 11 of those 12 years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Gary Edward Widman was born Dec. 20, 1956 in Storm Lake, the son of Gerald Lee and Mary Berenice (Hendershott) Widman. He was baptized, received 1st communion and was confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake where he was currently a member.

Growing up, Gary attended Hayes school in Storm Lake where he graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1975.

On March 15, 1986, Gary was united in marriage to Karen Ann Martin at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Bryce and Blake.

Gary was a self-employed farmer and enjoyed taking care of the land. He loved fishing, hunting, and playing cribbage. Gary was considered the "green grocer" and produced many vegetables, which he gave to friends and family. He also loved to macramé. Family was very important to Gary and they always came first. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Karen Widman of Storm Lake; sons, Bryce and Blake Widman both of Storm Lake; father, Gerald (stepmother, Chris) Widman of Storm Lake; brothers: Michael Widman of Eugene, Ore. and Richard Widman of Altoona; sisters: Maryann (Randy) Johnson of Sioux City and Jean (Scott) Miksch of Eugene, Ore.; nieces; nephews; extended family and many friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Berenice Widman; and parents-in-law, Lloyd and Florence Martin.
