Local driver escapes injury after falling asleep on rural road

Friday, January 11, 2013

Mario Chalche Gonzalez, 33, of Peterson, has been charged with Failure to Maintain control and Driving With No Insurance after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing a pickup owned by a Spencer woman on the morning of January 1, at 125th Avenue and 495th Street in Clay County.

Gonzalez told sheriff's officials that he was fatigued and had fallen asleep while driving. The truck entered the west ditch of 125th Avenue and hit a culvert, breaking the real axle. No other vehicles were involved, and the driver escaped serious injury.
