A Crash Course in the Blues

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

Rob Lumbard is among the pros joining Gary for his final appearance at BVU, in the "Blues History Revue" concert this month
Buena Vista University Adjunct Professor and professional musician Tom Gary will present a pair of informative concert events Thursday and Friday, Jan. 11 and Thursday, Jan 17, at 7 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium, as part of his "History of the Blues" interim class. The events are open to the public, free of charge.

On Friday the professor appears with his own Tom Gary Blues Band. Erick Hovey, Fort Dodge, sits in on guitar.

On the 17th, pianist Gary will be joined by some of Iowa's best-known blues performers, Bob Dorr, Rob Lumbard and Jeff Peterson. Dorr is the leader of the well-known Blue Band, and produces highly popular music shows on Iowa Public Radio and Iowa Blues compilations for Hot Fudge Music. He was inducted into the Iowa Rock 'n' Roll Music Association Hall of Fame in 2000

Lumbard recieved his folk-blues musical education in the bars on Forest Avenue in Des Moines, sitting in with legendary performers on harp or guitar. He performed with the Wapsie River Band and has appeared with national stars like Lyle Lovett, The Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Leon Redbone.

Jeff Petersen is one of eastern Iowa's best guitar players and a founding member of The Blue Band. He has performed for over 40 years.

This will likely be Gary's final local appearance, as he plans to relocate back to his native Des Moines.
