What we knew

Mustangs ready to ride again

A one point loss to West Sioux kept Newell-Fonda from making their third straight State Tournament appearance last season, but with 10 returning letterwinners back from that squad, the third-ranked Mustangs are primed to push for their ninth state appearance in school history, with five under their belt since 2000 alone.

The Mustangs were 19-6 a year ago and haven't disappointed thus far, entering the break unbeaten at 9-0 as Dick Jungers' (212-47 career record) deep group has been Class 1A's second leading scoring offense at 63 per game. Defensively, they've allowed just 38 a night, all while playing one of the most difficult schedules in Class 1A.

The Mustangs have played just two 1A teams thus far, beating them by an average of 46 points per game. They'll play just three more 1A teams in the regular season. They already hold victories over Class 4A Spencer (6-3), Class 3A East Sac (6-5) and OA-BCIG (6-5) and Class 2A's Manson Northwest Webster (7-2), North Union (6-3) and Ridge View (7-5). The Mustangs still have another go-round with Spencer before the end of the year and will also have a nice tune-up against one of the top-three teams in Class 3A in Estherville-Lincoln Central (8-1) on January 10th.

N-F's deep bench has allowed them to run relentlessly, and they've found open looks in transition, knocking down 56 three-pointers thus far, second in the class.

All-State caliber point guard Renee Maneman has led the show, putting in 15.4 points a night on 43% shooting. She's added 5.3 assists, 3.7 steals and 4.1 rebounds. Senior Andrea Christensen has knocked down 58% of her shots for 10.7 points per game to go with 4.1 rebounds. Claudia Larsen had netted 8.8ppg, 5.2rpg and 2.6 blocks, Brianna Wells has knocked down 47% of her three points tries for 8.0ppg, and Taiyler Schrank has hit 36% of her threes for 6.3 points per game.

The N-F bench play of Hailey Falline, Jordan Wilken, Maddi Morenz, Taylor Lago, Marianna Overgaard, Morgan Magnussesn, Abby Christensen, Missy Morenz and Haley Voss combine for another 17 points per outing.

The E-LC matchup outstanding, the rest of the Mustangs' schedule looks favorable on paper as this could be the season they make another deep push down in Des Moines.

What we learned

Wins hard to come by in Northwest Iowa

With Newell-Fonda as an exception, the Storm Lake area girl's basketball programs have struggled to find prolonged success as of late with just three teams in the coverage area sporting winning record at intermission in the Mustangs (9-0), Ridge View (7-5) and Sioux Central (6-4).

The Rebels were a 20-4 club a season ago but were hit heavily by graduation. Sioux Central has begun to find their identity of late however, entering the break having won four of their last five.

Since a 20-3 season in 2009-2010, including a state tournament berth, the Storm Lake girls have fallen on hard times, dropping 51 contests straight as they struggled replace the once senior laden lineup.

Since their impressive showing during the 2006-2007 season, St. Mary's hit a somewhat similar rough patch, going 9-73 between 2007 and 2011. The Panthers began to turn the corner last season as they flirted with .500 at 10-12. The Panthers could break through this season as they currently sit at 3-5, led by 22.3 points and 12.5 rebounds a game by Jasmine Demers.

Alta-Aurelia is on to their third head coach in three years and currently sit at 2-7 overall. They were 4-18 a season ago. Laurens-Marathon hits the break at 1-7 after a 2-19 run last winter.

Breakout players

Brianna Wells - Junior - Newell-Fonda

A role player for the Mustangs last season, Wells began to find her three-point stroke at the end of the year, finishing with 19 made threes at a 29% clip as she chipped in 5.0 points per game. She was the Mustangs top foul shooter at 83%.

Shifted into a starting role this year, Wells has upper her scoring average to 8.0 per game, while hitting 47% from the field. She leads the team with 20 made three at a 47% rate and is hitting 100% at the foul line.

Dana Hustedt - Senior - Ridge View

Hustedt shot 20% from the floor as a junior, netting 4.3 points a night for the Raptors last season.

As a senior this year, she's hitting closer to 30% for a team-high 11.2 points per game, including 13 three-pointers made.

She has upped her rebounds from 0.9 last season to 3.2 this winter and has also averaged 2.6 assists and 2.5 steals per outing.
