A Linn Grove father and son have lost their home and many of their belongings in a fire shortly before Christmas.

The Buena Vista County Communications Center received a report of a fire at the Loren Weier residence at 203 West High Street in Linn Grove at around 6:30 p.m. December 23.

Linn Grove Fire Department responded, along with Buena Vista County Sheriff's deputies, and found the home heavily engulfed.

Sioux Rapids Fire Department was called in, as well as tankers from Peterson and Marathon on mutual aid to try to get enough water to the scene.

The occupants evacuated as the fire spread, and no injuries were reported. The home is condidered a total loss.

"It was a case of a 13-year-old playing fire in the upstairs bedroom, and the bed caught on fire," said Sheriff Gary Launderville. "I believe he may have delayed a minute or two not certain what to do before he went downstairs to tell his father, and by then it was too late to stop. Linn Grove fire only has one or two guys really on the department, and with Sioux Rapids Fire about 15 minutes away, it was well out of control by then.

"It's hard to see a family lose their home like this, especially at Christmastime," Launderville said.
