Gas prices may keep inching up to start year at new high

Friday, December 28, 2012

Average retail gasoline prices in Iowa have risen 0.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.13/gallon for super unleaded at the start of the week. Storm Lake gas prices bottomed out at $2.93 last week and rose to about $2.97 at the start of the week. The national average is $3.24/g, holding steadym according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. At that rate, Christmas was expected to be the highest ever for gas prices, just edging out 2011. Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan says, "Bad news likely won't stop there - gasoline prices in six out of the last seven years have increased between Christmas and January 15 of the following year. If the national average rises to at least $3.26/gal before New Years Day it will mark the highest start for gas prices ever on the first day of the year," DeHaan said.
