Friday, December 21, 2012

Tuesday night shortly after 8 p.m. ,Storm Lake Police officers were dispatched to 406 W 9th Street for a reported vandalism to a vehicle where gang graffiti was sprayed with blue paint on the trunk and license plate of a vehicle.

On arrival, officers observed other property had also been sprayed with gang graffiti. Officers then canvased the area of the West 8th and West 9th Streets trailer courts looking for suspects, and located three juveniles - two 13-year-old males and one 12-year-old male - all of Storm Lake, in the 500 block of West 8th Street.

Officers observed paint matching that of the graffiti on the faces and hands of the juveniles and they were taken into custody and transported to the Storm Lake Police Department.

During the investigation, the juveniles admitted to spray painting graffiti earlier in the night on at least 20 residences, vehicles, businesses, utilities, public streets, park equipment, and signs with damages totaling at least $4,000. It was also determined that the paint used during the vandalism had been stolen from a Storm Lake store.

All three juveniles were referred to Juvenile Court Services on two counts of Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, each a felony. One of the juveniles was also charged with Theft 5th Degree. This investigation is still continuing.
