SL Taco John's reports $2,300 theft following weekend burglary

Monday, December 17, 2012

Storm Lake Public Safety Director Mark Prosser has confirmed a $2,300 theft from the Storm Lake Taco John's last weekend was the result of a burglary.

The theft was reported at the Mexican fast-food chain restaurant on East Milwaukee Saturday, Dec. 8, but Prosser was unable to release any further details to the Pilot-Tribune.

While it is unclear if the break-ins are connected, several other burglaries have been reported in the past month at other Taco John's locations in north central and northwest Iowa, including Mason City on Nov. 15, Carroll on Nov. 24 or 25 and LeMars on Dec. 8.

Although the Pilot-Tribune received a tip a similar burglary recently occurred at the Spencer Taco John's on 12th Avenue Southwest, the Spencer Police Department was unable to provide confirmation by press time.

"I'm not sure what information is available on that," a representative at the Spencer Police Department told the Pilot-Tribune Friday morning.

Police reports from the thefts in Mason City, Carroll and LeMars indicate access was gained during the late evening or early morning hours by forcing the restaurant's rear door open.

Amounts of cash stolen in the other burglaries have not been disclosed, and no information on potential suspects is available.

Investigations appear to be ongoing.
