SIOUX RAPIDS - Sioux Central senior Austin Glawe poured in 24 points to go along with a new school record 23 rebounds as the Rebels hung on to top Laurens-Marathon in overtime Friday night, 56-53.
"Hard fought game on both ends," said Sioux Central head coach Stephen Tjaden. "Laurens-Marathon never allowed us to get a comfortable lead and battled back at the end of regulation. Our kids did a great job of fighting tough stretches and making plays at key situations. Austin Glawe gave us a great scoring and rebounding presence and the rest of the team filled their roles nicely. We still have a lot of improvements to make, but it was an exciting for the kids and Sioux Central supporters."
The Rebels built a 12-6 lead after one but saw the Chargers cut that lead to 20-18 by halftime. Sioux Central built up a little breathing room in the third, up 36-30 after the next eight minutes, but Laurens-Marathon answered with a 19-13 fourth to force overtime. SxC edged L-M 7-4 in the final frame.
Glawe hit on 10-of-18 from the field and 4-of-6 at the line during his career night. He also added four assists and three blocks.
Christian Sylvester followed with seven points and six assists, Chris Ripke had six points, and three assists, Colton Miller had six and two rebounds, Tim Saunders five and four rebounds and Karver Brown four points.
Seth Hersom led the Chargers in their season debut loss, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Stumbo had 17 points, six boards and seven assists, Ben Fuchs had seven points and Chase Oehlertz six.
