The Storm Lake St. Mary's Parish Hispanic Community has been planning for the large Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast as well as the events leading up to this special mass. The mass will be Sunday, Dec. 9 at noon until approximately 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Church with a fiesta to follow. The public is welcome to attend.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in Tepeyac in what is now Mexico in the early 1500s. The recognition of the Feast of Our Lady is very important to Latino parishioners. The community will begin preparations with a novena. Mass and rosary events will be held throughout the week.
The feast day celebrations begin at 4 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 with maņanitas (music and singing with a band), rosary and breakfast until 7 a.m. Mass will begin at noon with the native dancers. After mass, the dancers will lead the procession to St. Mary's School gym. Around 1:45 p.m. will be the re-enactment of the appearances of Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego. From 2:30-4 p.m. will be the meal, native dances, piņatas and games for the children.
As the actual feast day is December 12, the community will continue devotions into next week. Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 5 a.m. there will be maņanitas and breakfast with 6 p.m. mass, rosary and confessions.
