Mother arrested for abuse with a fly swatter

Monday, December 3, 2012

Storm Lake Police took a report of alleged child abuse at a residence Wednesday afternoon.

Officers, working in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Human Services, were told that a 10 year old child had been physically abused by his mother when she allegedly struck him in the face with a fly swatter and threw a shoe at him striking him in the stomach. The child received minor injuries from the assault.

Police and Human Service staff investigated, and the mother, Gloria Luna-Mendoza, age 29 of Storm Lake, was arrested on a felony charge of Child Endangerment. She was jailed on $5,000 bond, and released within hours.

Luna-Mendoza, a native of Mexico, was previously arrested in 2010, also on a child endangerment charge, and in that case too was released on the same day.

Police seized the items used in the alleged assault. The young victim was removed from the home by Human Services and placed into protective foster care.
