NEWELL - The Newell-Fonda boy's basketball team got out to an impressive enough start, leading Class 3A Spencer 21-13 after one, but they would go ice-cold in the second as Spencer posted a 22-1 advantage over the eight-minute span on their way to a 55-37 victory Thursday night.
Matthew Klemme led three Tigers in double figures as he posted 16 points and 11 rebounds. Blake Altenhofen also netted 16 and Matt Finnern 15.
Brady Bohe led the Mustangs in their season opener with 13 points. Dalton Anderson had seven points and eight rebounds, and Dillon Anderson and Brady Dicks had five points apiece.
It was a rough shooting night for Newell-Fonda as they put in just 15-of-50 attempts, including 2-of-18 from three.
The Mustangs (0-1) are on the road next week, visiting Laurens-Marathon Tuesday and North Union Thursday.
