Beavers roll past Morningside, 95-82

Monday, December 3, 2012

STORM LAKE - Senior Wes Nordquist turned in 23 points for the second straight game, while sophomore Cole Darrow followed with a career-high 22, and the Buena Vista men's basketball team used its best shooting effort of the season to cruise to a 95-82 non-conference home victory over Morningside College on Wednesday night.

Nordquist also chimed in with a game-high 17 rebounds en route to his fourth double-double in five games to start the year. He also dished out four assists and added three steals. Darrow, who shot 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 at the line, also chipped in with five boards and four assists. Alex Savage buried a pair of three-point shots and finished with 12 points and three assists.

As a team, BVU shot a season-high 59 percent from the field, including 10-of-20 from downtown, despite making just 68 percent of its attempts from the free-throw line.

The Beavers broke a 7-7 tie with a 15-5 run that gave them a 22-12 lead with seven minutes gone by. The Mustangs clawed their way back within three at 28-25 near the eight-minute mark, but a three-pointer from Troy Ticknor followed by a bucket and free-throw from Brett Heitkamp helped spark a 10-2 run that put BVU up 38-27. It led by as many as 13 late in the period before taking a 47-37 lead into the locker room.

Morningside got as close as seven early in the second half before the Beavers pushed their lead back to 14. After the Mustangs got back to within nine, a basket by Kyle Hooks put BVU back in front by double-figures with 14 minutes to play, and Morningside never got back within single digits until overcoming an 18-point deficit with five minutes to play to get as close as eight with a touch more than two minutes to play.

Nordquist, however, sank a pair of free-throws, and BVU scored seven of the game's final nine-points.

Buena Vista improves to 2-3 overall.
