Beaver basketball picked second in preseason coaches poll
STORM LAKE -- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) released its 2012-13 Preseason Men's Basketball Coaches Poll on Wednesday, and the Beavers have been picked to finish second.
BVU (50 points) earned one first-place vote and was selected second on the final six (coaches cannot vote for their own team). Coe College, last season's regular season champion, earned six first-place votes and totaled 55 points to earn the top spot in the poll.
The University of Dubuque picked up the final first-place vote and was selected anywhere from third to fifth on the remaining six to finish with 40 points, three ahead of 2010 champion Luther.
The Beavers, who went 17-11 overall last season (10-5 IIAC), picked up their seventh Iowa Conference Tournament title since 2000 by defeating the Kohawks in the championship game and advance into their 10th NCAA Tournament.
"We have a really tight knit group that loves to compete," says head coach Brian Van Haaften, who's entering his 17th season. "We have high expectations for ourselves and look forward to every game being very tough in the conference this year."
BVU, which returns two starters and five letterwinners from last season, tips-off its 2012-13 campaign this weekend when it takes part in the Carroll University Tournament in Waukesha, Wis. The team will open against Carthage College on Friday night at 6:00pm.
