Gladys L. Johnson, age 99, of Alta, passed away on Sunday, November 4, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 8, at 2:00 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta with the Rev. Don E. Rothweiler officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery of Cherokee. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday, November 8, from 1:00 -- 2:00 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
Gladys Lorraine Johnson was born in Alta, on March 11, 1913 to Arthur Richard Johnson and Martha (Erickson) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Alta Trinity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Alta High School in 1930 as the salutatorian of her class. The next few years she worked at the Peterson Grocery Store and the city library, followed by more than 25 years at the Alta Bank.
She lived with her mother and was a good caretaker. During her summer vacation she took many domestic and foreign trips. Her nieces and nephews have many fond memories of the loving things she did for them.
Preceding her in death were her parents; grandparents; uncle, Edward Erickson and his wife Alta; and many cousins.
She is survived by her sister, Lucille Kledis of Cherokee; her nine nieces and nephews; Germayne and Dick Johnson of Sutherland; several cousins and friends, Ray Vring and family, who provided Gladys with many years of help. Gladys will be remembered for all of her acts of kindness.
