Many people have asked who the Horizons group is and what they do.
This is a very special group and Alta is one of few communities that have taken time and effort to have such a group.
Alta was selected to be a part of the Horizons Development Program, based on their population of under 5,000 and that 10 percent of the community lies in the poverty level several years ago. At the time, only 28 communities in the state were selected to take part in the program; Alta is one of only a few that took their responsibility as serious as they did.
In the beginning, some 40 community members committed themselves to the program. The first steps included forming study circles followed by six weeks of guided community discussions, and 26 volunteers completed a nine-week leadership course. Topics of discussions included:
* Finding leaders within the community
* Identifying community assets
* Management ideas for bringing results
* Making meetings work
* Managing conflicts
* Building partnerships
* Moving from talk to action
* Valuing evaluation
* Communication for change
The Horizons members are concerned about the future of their community and meet on a monthly basis.
One of their other projects is the community garden which has been a great success for the past two years.
