Character Counts at SL Elementary

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Character Counts is back for the third year at Storm Lake Elementary School! On Tuesday, Oct.30, 848 students filed into the elementary gym, along with school staff, to welcome back the popular program which is based on the six pillars of character: TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING, and CITIZENSHIP.

Through skits presented by staff and students, RESPONSIBILITY was introduced as the pillar for the month of November. Students and staff were encouraged to wear green and each class entered the gym waving large green stars. These stars will be posted on the doors of every classroom. When a student demonstrates responsibility, their name will be recorded on the star. At the end of the month, these students will be recognized for their demonstration of character, and a new pillar will be introduced for December. The Character Counts stars will be hung on the walls outside of the classrooms to encourage students to demonstrate character, even when no one is watching.

Character Counts is a valuable tool to promote behavioral goals and character education within the school walls and the community. Public support of this program is welcome.
