The Alta Kiwanis met Tuesday, Oct. 30 at Wel-Life.
Guest speaker was Stacy Cole, Alta-Aurelia Elementary Principal. She spoke to the group about the changes taking place in education. With shifting population and different ethic groups, schools need to come up with new approaches to educating students. As part of this change, A-A schedules no classes four days throughout the school year. During those days teachers in a consortium with nine other school districts meet in either Storm Lake or Pocahontas. Together they discuss their curriculum in order to tailor programs to meet student's needs. Currently, the distrists are stressing reading depth and coherence. Non-fiction books are stressed which gives students chances to see how historians lok at various events. Students develop discipline in how to approach these works, analyze the material, and debate both sides of an issue.
