Beata Leanore Monkelien, the daughter of John M. and Edna (Johnson) Monkelien, was born in Fonda, on September 21, 1925. Bea lived her youth in Pocahontas County where she began her education in a country school and then graduated from Pocahontas High School. She continued her higher education at the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. Bea taught country school for two years at Grant Township #8 and then one year at Colfax Township #1.
On August 30, 1946 Bea was united in marriage to James W. Bailey at Elfsborg Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. Together, they were blessed with eight children: Lynn, Neil, Beverly, Barbara, Wayne, Becky, Bonnie, and Daniel. Bea and Jim were engaged in farming during their lifetime and resided in areas of Ayrshire, Cylinder, and Marathon. Bea was a loving, hard working and devoted housewife and mother to her family. In addition to caring for her home, she also worked alongside Jim helping with the farming.
Bea was a longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church at Marathon where she participated in the church circle and sang in the church choir. She had a beautiful voice and sang many solos. Bea was also a member of the Friendship Club for many years. Horses were an important part of Bea's life and she will be remembered as an accomplished horse woman who enjoyed riding and showing horses. Bea was involved with the Thresherman's activities. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren held a special place in her heart and she loved each and every one of them very much. Other special interests of Bea's included, quilting and collecting and refinishing antiques.
Bea's life will always be cherished and celebrated by her family which include her children: Lynn Bailey of Marathon; Neil (Kay) Bailey of Elizabeth, Ill.; Bev (Mike) McConeghey of Fairfield; Wayne Bailey of Ayrshire; Becky (Doug) Baker of Laurens; Bonnie Black of Laurens; Dan (Tracey) Bailey of Rembrandt; 17 grandchildren: Brian, Brent, Bradley, Jeffrey, Christopher, Ian, William, Aaron, Clinton, Laine, Lance, Heidi, Austin, Joshua, Ryan, Braeden, and Camden; 12 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim, on April 28, 2012; daughter, Barbara, in infancy; son-in-law, Robert Black; two brothers, Hubert and James; and one sister, Arline.
