Vera Leone (Birch) Wood was born on the family farm of Cleghorn, on October 1, 1921 to William Hammond Birch and Olive Pearl (Pooley) Birch.
Vera graduated from Cleghorn High School and attended Buena Vista College for 2½ years (1945). She was a grade school teacher at Glidden, Schaller, and Alton from 1944-1948.
On December 10, 1950, she married Gerald Wood from Storm Lake at the Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. After their honeymoon, they made their home where Gerald lived south of Storm Lake. They had a wonderful 56 years together and enjoyed living on the farm. Gerald and Vera were loving parents of two children, William Verne and Marlys Jane.
Vera was an active member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church since 1951. She was a member of the Camera Club, Pilgrim Missionary, Hayes Homemakers, Izaak Walton League and Coin Club. Vera received her 50 and 60 year college awards from Buena Vista College.
She had many hobbies such as playing the piano by ear since 8 years old, embroidery, and latch hook rugs. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, canning, puzzle books and picture albums.
Gerald and Vera went on several family trips and bus trips from Citizens National Bank.
The holidays were always a special time. At Christmas time it was a tradition when Vera baked her Saffron bread, fruit ball cookies and special decorations.
Vera is most remembered for enjoying her love of music and giving of herself to friends with food and craftwork.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: William Verne (Barbara) Wood of Galva; Marlys Wood of Storm Lake; three grandchildren: Eric (Angie) Wood; Kevin (Jennifer) Wood; Kelly Diischer; six great grandchildren: Julie, Zachary, Adam, Nathan, Lidia and Colton; one sister, Audrey Curry of Chico, Calif.; sister-in-law, Barbara Birch of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Virgil Wood of Sioux City; nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents; brothers: Milo Birch and Stanley Birch; sisters: Pearl McKenna, Lois Hazen, Alta Wilcox, and Berniece Johnson; brothers-in-law: Maurice Hazen; Jim Wilcox; Clinton Johnson; Jerry Curry; and sister-in-law, Margaret Birch.
