SIOUX CITY - Despite the cold temperatures, the Buena Vista cross country teams were back out on the course, and finished the day with several strong finishes, while taking part in the Briar Cliff Invite on Saturday.
Ashtyn Alfers was the first to cross the finish line for the women during the 5k race, posting a time of 20:12.77. She finished 69th among the 163 runners. Brandy Richards was next in 23:16.80 with Veronica King close behind in 23:40.29. Kaitlyn Vorthmann and Olivia Nelson round out the runners for the Beavers, recording times of 23:52.53 and 24:42.76, respectively.
Over on the men's side, Alex Lamp took 30th overall in a career-best time 26:26.56. Ben Berberich (27:42.48), Brian Christiansen (27:47.70), Seth Woodson (27:56.67), Tyler Peterson (28:02.31) and Andrew Laird (28:57.17) also ran career-best times in the 8k race. A total of 174 runners took part in the race. As a team, BVU placed ninth among the 14 teams that took part.
Both teams will be back in action again next Saturday, as they take part in the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invite at West Salem, Wis. That race will be the final tune-up for the Beavers before the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Championships on October 27.
