Raptors spoil Poky Homecoming in wild finish
STORM LAKE - Ridge View looked down and out, with their playoff hopes shrinking as an interception gave Pocahontas Area the ball back with under two minutes to play and a 12-10 lead over the Raptors.
However, the Indians would fumble the ball on their first play following the turnover to give Ridge View new life with the recovery. A Raptor penalty, which would nearly be their downfall in the second half, backed them up, and a pair of incompletions by John Kofmhal, subbing for the injured starting QB Ryan Garthoff, left Ridge View looking at 4th and 15 with under a minute to play.
Kofmhal found Dru Kenny on a short completion in front of the chains, and Kenny found a seam, streaking 60-yards into the end zone for an 18-12 victory on Pocahontas Area's Homecoming.
The start of the game was equally as exciting as the finish as the Indians' Draven Barth took the opening kickoff back 88-yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed for a 6-0 ball game.
Ridge View found a quick answer in Kenny as he broke loose on a 58-yard touchdown run on the ensuing drive.
Both defenses would clamp down after that, with the Raptors picking up the only other score of the half in a Jesus Nava field goal late in the second quarter
The defenses remained stingy in the third as both teams punted away all of their possessions.
Midway through the fourth, Pocahontas Area opened up a drive on their own 25-yard line, and a slew of Raptor penalties would give them nearly 30 free yards as they marched down to the Raptors' 25-yard line with a little over two minutes to play.
Barth would carry down to the 16-yard line, and his next carry saw him walk into the endzone. The two-point try failed as Poky reclaimed the lead at 12-10.
Kofmhal would be intercepted as he tried to rally the Raptors back, but Barth's fumble opened the door, which Ridge View capitalized on.
After Kenny's 60-yarder, the Indians made a run at as they drove from their own 31-yard line down to the Raptors' 31 with nine seconds left. QB Aaron Youngberg hit Logan Jepsen down to the 26-yard line with six seconds left. Youngberg's last shot went wanting as Matt Wandrey pulled down the interception to end the game.
Barth was averaging nearly 135 yards on the ground a game, but the Raptors were able to hold him to 88 yards on 21 carries Friday. Poky rushed 34 times for 128 yards on the night. Youngberg was 7-of-17 through the air for 81 yards as they fell to 4-3 on the year and 1-3 in district play.
Kenny led the way for the Raptors, rushing 26 times for 139 yards and a touchdown and added two grabs for 66 yards and a TD. Wandrey had 13 carries for 68 yards. Kofmhal was 3-of-11 passing for 85 yards, a TD and an interception. Michael Tiefenthaler had the third grab for 19 yards.
Ridge View overcame 10 penalties for 95 yards on the night, including 65 yards worth in the fourth quarter alone.
The Raptors improve to 3-4 on the season with a 3-2 mark in district play. They're back home next week to take on OA-BCIG (5-2) in a non-district contest.
