Real Estate Specialists' lobby was full on Wednesday morning, as community members gathered to congratulate Norm Knoke on his retirement.

"Judging by the size of the crowd, he has a lot of friends," said Joe Aube, owner of Real Estate Specialists. "Norm will be missed by the Real Estate Specialists team."

Since moving from Decorah to Storm Lake 39 years ago, Norm has seen major changes in downtown retail business.

In 1956, Norm began his career in retail with Grahams Department stores, transferring to Storm Lake's store in 1973. After Grahams closed, Norm began working at Douglass Clothing in 1981, and in 1990, he and his wife, Sandy, purchased Bridal Reflections, which closed in 2001.

Norm joined Real Estate Specialists in 1990, specializing in commercial investment properties and residential single family home sales.

"I've enjoyed the last 12 years here at Real Estate Specialists," he said. "We have a good crew here, and Joe (Aube) has been a good teacher."

With Sandy's retirement from Methodist Manor this June, the two have traveled to Hawaii and have visited family in Cincinnati and San Francisco.

Following the purchase of a home in a gated community in Hot Springs Village, Ark., the Knokes will be enjoying a fairer winter.

"It (gated community) has 11 lakes and nine golf courses, so there will be something to do," Norm said, with a laugh.
