On September 24, at approximately 4:23 p.m. at the intersection of Barton and W. 5th in Storm Lake, a vehicle driven by Sounthone Sounnarath of Storm Lake was involved in an accident with another vehicle driven by Ronald Bryan of Storm Lake. The two vehicles collided causing one injury and damages estimated at $7,000. Bryan was cited for Fail to Maintain Control.
Possible huffing incident
On the evening of Tuesday, September 25, at approximately 7:39 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the Wal-Mart Store parking lot in reference to a report of a possible huffing incident.
Upon arrival of police they learned that two juvenile males had been in the store with cans of compressed air and witnesses observed the two males exit the store and while seated in their vehicle were allegedly coughing heavily and acting in a suspicious manner.
Police made contact with the two and identified them as two 15 year old males of Cherokee, and one 14 year old male of Alta. Police allege that the two 15 year old juveniles stole canned air from the store and were huffing in the vehicle. Police further allege the 14 year old male was illegally in possession of tobacco.
Police charged one 15 year old male with Theft 5th Degree and Huffing. He was processed and released to his parent.
Police charged the 14 year old male with Possession of Tobacco. He was processed and released to a parent pending a court date.
Police charged the second 15 year old male with Theft 5th Degree and Huffing. The male was transported to the Youth Detention Facility in Cherokee by request of his probation officer.
The case has been forwarded to the Juvenile Court Authority.
Man arrested on warrant
On the evening of Wednesday, September 26, at approximately 11:42 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was notified by the Buena Vista County Sheriffs Department that they had located and arrested a person wanted by the SLPD.
Police were notified that Demetrius Staten, age 49 of Alta, was arrested on a warrant charging him with OWI. The charge stemmed from a traffic stop on June 24, where Storm Lake Police alleged he was driving under the influence of a narcotic.
Police submitted evidence to the State Crime Lab that returned positive that Staten was allegedly driving under the influence of a narcotic.
Staten was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.
The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted by the Buena Vista County Sheriffs Department.
Sexual assault case
On June 18, the Storm Lake Police Department, took a report of a possible sexual assault of a child which occurred during the summer of 2009.
Police conducted an investigation and allege Sylvester Simon, age 50 of St. Paul, Minn. formerly of Storm Lake sexually assaulted a 4 year old child in Storm Lake. Following an investigation a warrant was issued charging Simon with Sexual Abuse 2nd Degree (class B felony).
Police determined that Simon moved to St. Paul, Minn. On September 26, Simon was located and arrested in St. Paul, Minn. by the St. Paul Police Department. Simon is being held on a $25,000 cash bond in Minnesota awaiting extradition.
The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Iowa Department of Human Services, St. Paul PD, the Mercy Medical Center Child Advocacy Center and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Failure to appear in court
On the evening of Wednesday, September 26, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department responded to 111 Mae Street in reference to locate a wanted person.
Upon arrival police located and arrested Maria Laura Parra-Rosales, age 25, of Storm Lake. Parra was wanted out of Buena Vista County on a warrant charging her with Failure to Appear in Court reference Theft 4th Degree.
Parra was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $1,000.00 cash bond.
