IKM-Manning handles Sioux Central, 35-6

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

MANNING - Sioux Central got behind early and couldn't stay with IKM-Manning Friday night as the Rebels fell, 35-6, on the road in a Class 1A District 2 match-up. IKM-Manning scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to take a stranglehold on the game, and never looked back.

"Defensively, we couldn't stop them in the first quarter," Sioux Central coach Brandon Goodchild said. "They're a tough team. They're big and they've got speed."

Sioux Central struggled to get its offense going as IKM-Manning led 27-0 at half and 35-0 before the Rebels finally broke the goal line. Nathan Leer scored on a 30-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout. Leer finished with a team-high 86 yards on 13 carries.

"We had a hard time moving the ball," Goodchild said. "We kind of buckled down later but we also had a lot of penalties that will hurt your team."

IKM-Manning, now 5-0 on the season and ranked ninth in the AP prep poll in Class 1A, scored on a 42-yard play in the second quarter. Its defense held Devin Tripp to 74 yards on 17 carries, and allowed quarterback Parker Habben to complete 1-of-6 passes for just four yards. Tripp led the defensive effort with 16 tackles on the night. Tim Saunders and Matt Koenig had seven apiece.

Sam Wegner led IKM-Manning with 10 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown. Devontay Hocken had 13 carries for 61 yards and a score.

The Rebels fall to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in the district with their second-consecutive loss. They will host Manson-NW Webster (2-3, 1-2) next Friday in Albert City.
