HOLSTEIN - Second-ranked Fort Dodge, St. Edmond got a game from Ridge View Friday, but in the end, tailback Mericle was too much for the Raptors as he put up a career high 233 rushing yards and 3TDs in a 26-7 win for the Gaels.
St. Edmond has been among 1A's most dominant rushing teams with 1657 yards and 24TDs through five weeks. Mericle is fourth in the class as he now has 924 yards and 17TDs. Vinnie Harvey added 125 yards and TD on the ground for the Gaels Friday as they built a 26-0 halftime lead.
The Raptors sharpened up in the second half, forcing a pair of Fort Dodge turnovers, but they were only able to put one score on the board early into the fourth on an 11-yard Ryan Garthoff run.
The Gaels (5-0) ran 55 times for 374 yards, compared to 43 for 188 by Ridge View.
Garthoff had 14 carries for 63 yards. Dru Kenny rushed 22 times for 69 yards and Matt Wandrey five for 22. Garthoff completed 16-of-26 passes for 163 yards. John Kofmhal had six grabs for 63 yards, Kenny three for 40 and Michael Tiefenthaler three for 32. Dillon Kunneke and Nate Myrice led the Ridge View defense with 10 tackles apiece.
Ridge View (1-4, 1-2) is at home again Friday night as they take on Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto (3-2, 1-2).
