The City of Storm Lake has approached the Storm Lake School District, requesting a "right of first refusal" agreement on the vacant former South School building. On Wednesday, the school board agreed.
Under the agreement, if the school board considers any offer to purchase the school property, it would have to give the City notice and allow it a 10-day period to match the offer.
City officials have had plans drawn up to convert the school into a multi-purpose space that could host Witter Gallery, a fitness center, business entrepreneur assistance program and other uses, but it is anticipated that it could be four or five years before that project could be done. The site has also been looked at by at least one potential developer for potential low-income housing conversion.
The vote to grant the right of first refusal was unanimous, with no discussion. A public hearing was first held on the matter, with no one speaking.
