Romney and Obama 'revealed'

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

I just finished watching the 3-hour programming on CNN of a 90-minute biography of Romney ("Romney Revealed"), and a 90-minute biography of Obama ("Obama Revealed") - by two different producers, and sponsored by CNN. I consider myself a pretty objective Independent (don't much like either party), and looked forward to a back-to-back objective comparison of the candidates.

CNN should be ashamed of itself!

The 90-minutes on Romney was a true biography. Starting with his parents, and covering the influences and activities throughout his infancy, adolescence, teenage and college years, his religion, family life, business and political life, it provided an insight into the development of his character - who he is. As a former journalist and journalism professor, I really admired the comprehensive (and as far as I could tell, objective) job the producer did. And I expected the same for the Obama biography.

The 90-minutes on Obama, done by a different producer, started with the day Obama was sworn in as president and spent the entire program citing his challenges and accomplishments as president. Not one minute of the program was devoted to the character-building influences on his life: nothing about his parents, his childhood, teenage and college years, or his professional life and activities before he became president - no background at all. Not one word of his life before the presidency; not of his birth family, nor his religion, not about his friends or associates, nor his activities. I learned nothing about his character development. The entire program was one long, free 90-minute political campaign ad for his re-election. And CNN had been running it on air innumerable times.

For shame, CNN--for the blatant, unabashed revelation of your political bias! As a former journalism professor, I give you the grade of "F" as a reputable news organization. At least try to give the impression that you have some journalism ethics.
