Coming to Storm Lake is like being home. Slight's first teaching position was in fact at Storm Lake where he served as a science teacher at the high school 1995-99.
"I have very fond memories of those four years teaching in the district," he said. "Many of those dedicated people that I worked with are still in the district and I am looking forward to working with them again. The great education the Storm Lake Community Schools provides students along with having family in the area are just a few reasons for returning to the district."
Slight's brother Al has been a math teacher at the SLHS since 1994.
Slight's most recent position was principal at the Creston High School. Previous to that he was a middle school/high school principal for four years.
"Sound educational practices are effective at any level," he said in reference to going from a high school position back to a middle school position.
Slight's undergraduate education was completed at Iowa State University and his graduate work was completed at Drake.
His wife, Lori, a graduate of Buena Vista University, is back at her alma mater, serving as head volleyball coach there.
Slight is looking forward to the new opportunity and sharing the wealth of experience he has gained from schools of various sizes over the years.
"I have had the opportunity to work in each of those schools with great people and it's been the partnership with those great people that have allowed me to improve student achievement and the learning experience for the students in those districts."
He continued, "I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with the staff and students of the school district again. Storm Lake is a great place with great people and I am looking forward to continuing the rich educational experience that the students of Storm Lake Community Schools are receiving."
Slight and his wife have two sons - Nick, 11, who will be in fifth grade at SLMS and Jack, 4, who will be in preschool.
