Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 9, at 1:30 p.m. St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the church. Interment will take place at the Florida National Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. with his remains to be placed beside his wife. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to American Cancer Society and a scholarship in his name will be established at Storm Lake High School. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born in Worthington, Minn. on January 20, 1924. He graduated from high school in Little Rock in 1941. He was a Navy veteran of WW II with active duty in the South Pacific as an aviation torpedo man and also participated in the Navy basketball team.
Bob received his B.A. Degree in 1949 in education after coursework at Cornell and Morningside Colleges where he received all conference honors in basketball at both schools.
Bob married Donna Wilken of Rock Rapids, Iowa on August 4, 1949.
He spent five years as a teacher and coach in Durant and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Master's Degree in school administration in 1954. He spent 33 years as a superintendent of schools in Calamus, West Liberty, Perry, Area VI Community Colleges and the last 19 years with the Webster City Schools, retiring in 1987. He was involved in many professional organizations both in Iowa and nationally.
He and his wife Donna moved to Florida in 1989 dividing time between there and their cottage at West Lake Okoboji. Upon the death of his wife of 55 years in 2005, he moved to Storm Lake to be closer to family.
Bob is survived by his three children and ten grandchildren. They include: daughter Lori and Mike Porsch of Storm Lake, daughter Kari Kirchner of Lexington, Ky., and son Jan and Susan Horsfall of Colorado Springs, Colo. Grandchildren include Jacob Porsch, Storm Lake, Alyssa Porsch, Omaha, Neb., Nathan Porsch, Fort Collins, Colo., Jennifer and Christopher Kirchner of Lexington, Ky., Hunter, Britta, Lane, Finn and Blaise Horsfall of Colorado Springs, Colo. Other surviving family members are his sisters Marjorie Uzzo of Sibley, Mildred Landon of Atlanta, Ga., various nieces and nephews and honorary daughter Adele Barnett of Fielding, New Zealand. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna and infant twin sons Jon and Joel.
