William James Christiansen was born December 12, 1927 in Newell, the son of Lorenia (Oldham) and Henry Christiansen. Growing up, Bill was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Newell. He attended school in Newell where he graduated from Newell School in 1948.
On June 12, 1945, Bill entered the United States Navy where he served his country until he was honorably discharged on August 18, 1946.
On August 28, 1949, Bill was united in marriage to Joanne Larsen at the First Baptist Church in Newell. Together, they were blessed with five children: Tim, Nancy, Mary Jo, Dwight, and Karla.
Bill and Joanne were one of eight charter families of Bethel Baptist Church in Newell. He was a faithful member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell where he served as a deacon and other offices. He was a member of the Newell Co-op Elevator Board, Newell Providence School Board, and the Newell American Legion.
Bill enjoyed railroad motor car association and his work as a commodity broker. He loved farming, especially later planting and attending to his apple and fruit orchard. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed "going to the office" as he flew his own small airplane. He treasured spending time with his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Joanne Christiansen of Newell; children: Tim (Susan) Christiansen of Sheldon; Nancy Johnson of Pomeroy; Mary Jo (Brad) Busse of Saint Joseph, Minn.; Dwight (Jeanine) Christiansen of Odessa, Texas; Karla (Tim) Hall of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; brother, Dick (Betty) Christiansen of Newell; brothers-in-law: Richard (Pauline) Larsen of Newell; Reverend David Beal of Phoenix, Ariz.: extended family and many friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lorenia Christiansen; sisters-in-law: Marie Beal and Marian Eldred.
