On the evening of Wednesday, August 1, at approximately 8:17 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of East 3rd Street in reference to a report that a small child was walking alone on the railroad tracks.
Upon arrival of police they met with the reporting party who had located and retrieved a 2 year old child off of the railroad tracks. Police were on location with the young child for over fifteen minutes before locating the child's mother at 1110 East 3rd Street.
Police identified the mother as Rosario Cervantes, age 35, of Storm Lake. Following an investigation police arrested Cervantes and charged her with Child Endangerment. She was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond.
The child was released to the custody of a family member.
A report was filed with the Iowa Department of Human Services.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 1, at approximately 5:57 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the area of Sunset Park and College Street in reference to a report of several juveniles huffing near the shoreline of Storm Lake.
Upon arrival of police they located four juvenile males and as police approached the juveniles they allege they observed one of them in the act of inhaling spray paint fumes from a plastic bag (Huffing). The juvenile after huffing began to sway and lose his balance as police arrived and took him into custody.
Police conducted an investigation and reportedly acquired information and evidence that all four juvenile males, two age 13 and two age 14 of Storm Lake, were huffing.
Police took all four juveniles into custody and transported them to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center where they were treated and released for exposure to toxic chemicals.
Police charged all four juveniles with Public Intoxication. They were processed and released to their parents pending a court date.
The case has been forwarded to the Juvenile Court Authority.
On the morning of Thursday, August 2, at approximately 6:30 a.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to 305 Oneida Street in reference to a burglary in progress to a vehicle at a residence.
Responding officers were advised that the reporting party had exited her residence Thursday morning and reportedly observed an adult male wearing a blue striped shirt exit the passenger door of her vehicle and run southbound away from the residence. The victim reported that several dollars in change had allegedly been stolen from her vehicle.
As responding police units arrived in the area of the residence one observed a subject matching the suspect's description running near the intersection of East 2nd Street and Hudson Street eastbound. Other police units arrived on scene and apprehended the suspect just east of the intersection of East 2nd Street and Hudson Street.
Police identified the suspect as Ashanti Kiere, age 24, of Storm Lake. Police report they seized approximately $18 in change from Kiere. Following an investigation Storm Lake Police charged Kiere with Burglary 3rd Degree (aggravated misdemeanor). He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond.
No injuries were reported.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 1, at approximately 3:56 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of West Milwaukee Avenue and Barton Street in reference to a report that a train had struck a pedestrian.
Upon arrival of police they located a male victim, later identified as Deon Parkhurst, age 19 of Storm Lake, lying on the south side of the railroad tracks west of the Barton Street crossing.
Parkhurst was suffering from multiple injuries as a result of being struck by a Canadian National train which was westbound on the railroad tracks. The train had also stopped just west of the scene.
Witnesses told police that Parkhurst was walking westbound on the railroad tracks and was struck from behind by a westbound train.
Parkhurst was transported by paramedics to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and was later airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. His condition is unknown.
The incident remains under investigation by the Storm Lake Police Department.
The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, the Buena Vista County Paramedics and the Canadian National Railroad Police Department.
Wanted man found
On the afternoon of Thursday, August 2, at approximately 5:22 p.m., the Storm Lake Police Department responded to 431 Otsego Street in reference to locating a wanted person.
Upon arrival police located and arrested Thomas Meier, age 41, of Storm Lake. Meier was wanted out of Clay County, Iowa on a warrant charging him with Failure to Appear in Court reference 2 counts of Theft 5th Degree.
Meier was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a $1,700 cash bond.
All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty.
On July 26, at approximately 5:48 p.m., at the intersection of Flindt and Richland in Storm Lake, a vehicle driven by Tomas Olivo of Newell was involved in an accident with another vehicle driven by Randy Hogrefe of Storm Lake.
The two vehicles collided causing total damages estimated at $1,850. Olivo was cited for Failure to Stop in a Safe and Assured Distance and No Insurance.
Between August 1 and August 2, two thefts were reported in Storm Lake. The total value of the items reported missing was estimated at $80.
On July 29, a vandalism was reported in Storm Lake. Total damages were estimated at $150.
