Shelby won first place in the Art event and she also won the Spirit of Miss Teen Award. Parents were asked to write letters about why their daughter captures the spirit of Miss Teen and Shelby's dad, Dave Madsen's letter was chosen.
Seems like yesterday, I met your mom. You were a cute little blonde who couldn't see over the arm of the chair.
The last 10 years, I have seen you mature into the young lady you are today.
Having survived the car crash that about took your life and that did take the life of your real dad shows that the Good Lord has special things in mind for you.
You have always treated me as "your dad" even though I can never replace Gary. Together as a family we have celebrated victories and dried tears, had laughs and hugs.
You never boast a win or ridicule a loss. You always handle things with class. You always have a soft spot in your heart for the underdog and the less fortunate.
I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU AND VERY LUCKY YOU ARE IN MY LIFE.
Even though you are not my daughter by blood, you will always be "My Little Girl." I love you very much and very proud of you!
Alex Place, from Denver, Iowa was chosen as the 2012 Miss Teen of Iowa.
