Whitecaps: Capping off another successful year in the pool

Monday, July 30, 2012

The Storm Lake Whitecaps have just completed another successful season, wrapping up their regular meets Wednesday night hosting Cherokee in a dual make-up meet that had to be called off early due to lightning. Conference meet action is scheduled for today.

"For the past eight weeks, more than 90 kids from age five to eighteen survived the shivering cold and simmering heat, dedicated themselves to practice and improvement, and flashed a winning smile out of the pool no matter how they placed in a race," said Dan Berglund, representing the Whitecaps program.

"Storm Lake is fortunate to have this summer program as well as a newly formed winter team available to our youth," Berglund says. "It is no small task to keep things running smoothly. Many thanks go to parents who volunteer their time; coach Mary Kate Mooney; the City of Storm Lake and Buena Vista University who provide facilities; The Pilot Tribune and KAYL for their media coverage; and all area citizens who save their recyclable cans for our can drive. Your donations coupled with annual funding from Community Chest keep the Whitecaps financially afloat. Hats off to Genesis Development, too, for processing the sea of cans that are unloaded on their docks in one evening."

Plans are for the program to continue and grow. "The Whitecaps promote swimming as a life time sport and help each swimmer reach his or her best while having fun," Berglund says. "Thank you again to the entire community for playing a role in this wonderful program."
