Cobblestone 'view from above' found

Monday, July 9, 2012

A recent article in the Pilot-Tribune on the potential for restoring the long-vacant Cobblestone Ballroom at Lakeside has stirred plenty of interest from around Iowa and beyond. Tracey Sievers sends us this unusual aerial photo of the Cobblestone, taken in the mid-70s near the end of the ballroom's heyday.

The island, more heavily eroded away today, can be seen as well as the concession building and bathhouse around the Cobblestone, which were torn down years ago.

"The Cobblestone was a big part of Storm Lake and the entire area and it should be restored," Tracey says. "Hopefully this aerial will help spark some interest for the area and bring back those many special memories for many families. I know my family had memories there, and I would enjoy reading memories from others of this landmark."

Sievers' step-father did aerial photography in Buena Vista County and the surrounding region for 40 years, and Tracey, of Quimby, now continues the work for State Aerial. The family holds a vast collection of aerial photographs dating to 1971. Although his father passed away in 2010, Sievers is often able to connect with local families thanks to the images.
