Pastor's Corner: Celebrating freedom

Friday, July 6, 2012

Happy 4th of July to all of you! I love this country and am happy that God allows me to live here, where I am free. Yes, we are free. The government may do this or rule that or mandate something else, but there is another kingdom that is not of this world. Whenever I get a little stressed out over something the government is doing, I calm myself by remembering that God is in control. He has a plan for everything.

The 4th of July is a day that we celebrate the new freedom of the people who live on this side of the ocean from England. In Philadelphia those many years ago we said, "We Are Free!" A war ensued, blood was shed, but freedom held. We celebrate that freedom this week.

I remember the 200th anniversary of this country. I was six years old and was riding in a parade in our little town on the 4th of July, atop a buggy pulled by two ponies. My brothers and I were wearing red, white, and blue clothes made by my grandmother. We really celebrated. That was the only parade I remember in my little town of Creighton, Mo.

Another battle was fought 2,000 years ago on a hill outside of Jerusalem. The Son of God was in a battle for freedom for you and me. He gave his life to win the victory, which was celebrated by his resurrection from the dead three days later. We are free. Counsels and churches may rule this or that...government may say this or that...but make no mistake...God is victorious. He paid for our sins through Jesus Christ. You are free dear friend. You are free. Rejoice that God has written your name in heaven through the free gift of redemption through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 118:5

In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free.
