Steven R. Sassman, age 64, of Alta, Iowa, died on Monday, June 18, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 21, at the Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation was Wednesday, June 20, at the Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. The arrangements were under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Steven Ray Sassman, the son of LeRoy and Joan (Peterson) Sassman, was born in Storm Lake, on March 31, 1948. The majority of Steve's youth was spent in the Alta community where he received his education. Steve was a 1966 graduate of the Alta High School.

On June 30, 1967, Steve was united in marriage to Denise Carlson in Albert City, Iowa. This couple was blessed with three sons: Mike, Todd, and Troy. The first five years of Steve and Denise's marriage were spent in Storm Lake. They then moved to Alta, where they have made their home and raised their family. Steve worked for Hy-Grade in Storm Lake for 15 years and then drove a delivery truck for the Clear Lake Bakery for the next 10 years. He enrolled at Western Iowa Tech, where he received his Associate of Arts degree in nursing, earning his LPN degree. The remainder of Steve's professional career was spent working for the State of Iowa at a facility in Cherokee.

Steve was a long time member of the Alta Fire Department, the Buena Vista County Tea Party, and a member of Summit Evangelical Free Church. He thoroughly enjoyed working on cars, attending car shows and was very talented working with his hands. The love for his family was evidenced in every area of Steve's life and he always enjoyed supporting his grandchildren by attending their activities. Because of his grandchildren, he became a hockey fan in these last years. The quiet manner in which Steve lived his life testified to his personal faith in Christ. Even in the last days of his life, the light of Christ still shown brightly through Him.

Steve's life, love and legacy is honored and cherished by his wife of nearly 45 years, Denise, of Alta; his sons: Mike (Linda) Sassman of Sioux Center; Todd (Donette) Sassman of Sergeant Bluff; and Troy Sassman and his fiancée, Robin, of Boone; his grandchildren: Zachary, Joshua, Lyndsay, and Aaron Sassman; Caleb, Gabriel, and Elizabeth Sassman; Alaina and Olivia Sassman; his step grandchildren: Sarah, Ethan, and Katie Morick; one step-great grandson: Eli Nibbelink; his mother: Joan Sassman of Alta; three brothers: Jim Sassman of St. George, Utah; Gary Sassman of Whitewater, Wis.; and Kevin Sassman of Des Moines; two sisters: Bev Smith of Odebolt; Nancy Sanderman of Schaller; nieces, nephews; other extended family and my friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, LeRoy; and one brother, Randy.
