Hot air balloons, Talent Search, pro tractor pull add to BV Fair fun

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Buena Vista County Fair organizers are putting together lots of special activities for this year's celebration - and bringing back a few old favorites.

Hot air balloons will be featured Friday, July 13th, returning a favorite spectator event that dates to the years when Storm Lake hosted flights as part of Balloon Days celebrations. Pilot Mike Reinert is setting up the event. Weather permitting, balloon pilots will be taking off at 6:30 p.m., and returning later to the fairgrounds to present a balloon glow in the infield at the grandstands, following the 4H entertainment.

Activities begin Wednesday, July 11 with a tractor display and a grill out at Hy-Vee from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. IMCA stock car racing is scheduled at the fairgrounds with hot laps at 6:45 p.m.

The NTPA Grand National Tractor Pull will take place with wild, high-horepower action on Thursday, July 12. This show will be a first for the fairgrounds, with some of the best pullers in the nation competing. Driver introductions start at 6:30 with action at 7, and a special celebrity guest may be stopping by.

On Friday, July 13, in addition to the balloon events, 4Hers will share their skills with the Pie Making, Share the Fun and Style Show events, and the Queen and Little Miss pageants will take place starting at 7 p.m..

The Bill Riley Talent Search will be held Saturday, July 14 at the grandstands, providing classic Iowa entertainment and excitement. The winners at the BV Fair qualify to go on and compete at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. For more information on the competition, contact Ron Hott, 712-299-4402 or email mwls@iw.net. The application for the Bill Riley Talent Search can also be found on the fair's new website, www.buenavistacountyfair.com. Known as "Mr. State Fair," the late Bill Riley rounded up the most talented young Iowans statewide for more than 40 years, and the legacy of the competitions continues.

More excitement is in the works - watch for additional announcements in the Pilot-Tribune and on the fair website.

There's plenty more fun at the fair - from the Baby Contests to the Pedal Pull to the Ag Olympics and the Antique Tractor Pull.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for youth 9-18 and children 8 and under are free. Season passes are $15 for adults, and $9 for ages 9-18.
