Storm Lake boys 2nd at Lakes Conference Meet

SPIRIT LAKE - In a crowded four-team race for first place at the 2012 boy's Lakes Conference tennis meet, Storm Lake came up one win shy as as they took second Wednesday in Spirit Lake.

The Tornadoes totaled 14 wins on the tournament, trailing Spencer's 15. Spirit Lake and LeMars made it a heated contest with 13 and 12 wins, respectively. Cherokee totaled six wins on the day, while Estherville-Lincoln Central was blanked.

#1 singles player Cole Anderson finished third to earn All-Lakes Conference honors. #2 Blake Overmohle was second and earned honorable mention and the #1 doubles team of Jesse Luedtke and Taylor Friesen also made the All-Lakes team with a second place finish.

"Well, we came within one win of taking home the traveling trophy," said Storm Lake head coach Ron Netten. "Our boys played very well today. I definitely saw the best play of the year from Cole, Taylor and Jesse, earning the honor of All-Conference for their efforts.

In #1 singles, Anderson went 3-2 in his third place showing. Spencer's Michael Gabhart won the meet as he ran off a 5-0 day.

Overmohle went 4-1 at #2 singles, edged by Spencer's Jordan Plueger, who also went 5-0 for the TIgers. Luedtke and Friesen went 32, and the #2 doubles team of Geoff Conference and Ross Dewerff went 4-1 to take second.

"Cole has been coming on strong with a fine all court game and some excellent passing shots," said Netten. "Blake was one tie-breaker away from joining them (on All-Conference), losing only to a Spencer player 5-4 (7-1). He still managed an Honorable Mention award. Geoff and Ross came close by winning the first four matches, only to drop the last one to a Spirit Lake team. dropping their opportunity for Honorable Mention. Can't say enough how these boys are rising to the occasion and representing our school with fine tennis play and sound teamwork. We have two more critical conference mees left then districts in a week. This team is showing signs of putting together their best play at the end of the season."

Storm Lake and Spirit Lake met for regular season action on Thursday, with the match being halted after seven matches due to lightning.

Luedtke was a singles winner (1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (13-11)), Friesen won 7-5, 6-3 aand Dewerff won 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Anderson and Overmohl won 6-3, 6-2.

The Tornadoes close the regular season at home against Spencer Monday.
