The Storm Lake High School Band has a very special gig coming up - they were selected to represent Class 3A at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention on May 11, at 3 p.m. in the Downtown Marriott in Des Moines. Their audience will be made up of band directors from across the state.

"We are fortunate to represent class 3A this year," said SLHS Band Director Jason Heeren who shared that selected bands are only eligible to play at the convention every three years. "It is an honor to be part of the Iowa Bandmasters Convention; I am very proud of our students. The band is also very proud to represent the quality work being done in our entire music department."

The SLHS Band was selected to play at the convention after submitting an application and a recording of one of their concerts. A selection committee meets and listens to each recording submitted and determines if the band is of high enough quality to perform at the convention. The audition is completely anonymous; the selection committee has no idea who they are listening to. They have keen ears and are listening for quality of literature, a mature band sound that contains great intonation, balance, and blend. The goal of the committee is to select a quality band from each school classification to be represented at the conference.

The SLHS band will share with the community Sunday at 5 p.m. at the SL Middle School gym the music they will be performing at the convention. The event will also give the community a chance to congratulate the band members for this honor.

A free will donation will be taken at the door to help with the costs of meals in Des Moines.

"We are looking forward to representing the Storm Lake Community School District at the convention" Heeren concluded.
