He was born Dec. 1, 1918 in Storm Lake, the son of the late Ralph and Edna (Hodges) Sheffield. He graduated from Storm Lake High School where he played in the School Band and was active in athletics playing football, basketball and track and field events. He attended Buena Vista College for two years where he was a member of the Acapella Choir. He then attended Iowa State University, from which he graduated in 1941 with a BS Degree in Chemical Technology. He was employed by The Dow Chemical Company for 38 years as assistant Plant Superintendent and later as an Operations Planner.
He married the former Ruth A. Winslow at her family home in Mt. Pleasant on Dec. 12, 1943. Together they were fifty year members of The Memorial Presbyterian Church and members of the Choir for thirty years. He served terms on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees. He was a past President of the Midland Amateur Radio Club, Past President of the Midland Lions Club, and member of the Midland Country Club.
He enjoyed music, golf and playing bridge. He retired in 1979 and he and Ruth spent twenty winters in Arizona. Surviving in addition to his wife Ruth of 68 years is his son, Ronald and Amy Sheffield of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; brother, Gordon of Grand Island, Neb.; sister, Mrs. Helen (Gladwyn) Langer of Storm Lake; grandchildren, Laura Sheffield and Winslow Sheffield and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, one sister Mrs. Ruth Cunningham predeceased him in January 2008.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 15, at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home in Midland Mich. A private burial was held in LaPorte Cemetery.
