Lowell Fields, age 67, of Storm Lake, died Feb. 27, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 2, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa Central Community College ESL program or the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Hospice. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Lowell Gene Fields was born Dec. 22, 1944 in Spencer, the son of Bradley and Leona (Bauman) Fields. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Royal, where he was later confirmed.

Growing up, Lowell attended school in Royal where he graduated from Royal High School in 1962.

From 1966 -- 1970, Lowell served in the Iowa National Guard.

Lowell was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He was a member of the ARC Organization, Storm Lake Garden Club, and was a Salvation Army Bell Ringer. Lowell helped with the Justice To Our Neighbors and also helped organize the Free Legal Immigration Clinic, as well as other community activities.

Lowell was an ESL Teacher at Iowa Central Community College and owned and operated Storm Lake Roofing. He was a foster parent for fourteen years and adopted two of the children. Lowell was proud of being a foster parent and received the Foster Parent of the Year Award in Iowa and the Dan Chavez -- Beyond the Horizons ESL Teacher of the Year Award.

Lowell loved gardening and camping. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Mexico. In his spare time, he attended different area churches where he spoke about the Justice To Our Neighbors Program.

Left to mourn his passing are his daughters: Angela Dawn Fields of Des Moines; Renee Ann (Mike) Drottz of Mitchellville; Rachel Alice (Scott) Krier of Aurelia; grandchildren: Isaiah, Jacob, and Jessica Drottz of Mitchellville; Aaron, Alicia, and Anthony Krier of Aurelia; step-grandson, Santiago Moral; sisters: Linda (Bob) Nelson of Webb; Elaine (Friend, Bob Cuttsinger) Ullensvang of Sacramento, Calif.; LaVonne (Jeff) Hallberg of Atlanta, Ga.; Lynette (Jeff) Whitacre of Estherville; nieces and nephews: Brian (Stephanie DePrisco) Whitacre of Phoenix, Ariz.; Brice Whitacre of Phoenix, Ariz.; Jenny (Jason) Ommen of Estherville; Thomas (Christin) Ullensvang of Sacramento, Calif.; Brad (Keri) Hallberg of Fort Mill, S.C.; Stacey (Cade Calder) Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Jason Hallberg of Jacksonville, Ala.; Brooke (Craig) LaFarr of Omaha, Neb.; numerous extended family and many friends.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Bradley E. and Leona G. Fields; nieces, Heather and Jill Nelson.
