Buena Vista University Theatre will present Doubt, a Parable by John Patrick Shanley, on April 25-28 at 8 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium.
The play, which won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play and Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama, was also a 2008 movie featuring Meryl Streep who won the Screen Actors Guild award for her performance. Director is Dr. Bethany Larson, associate professor of theatre. Sophomore student Kadie Dennison assists.
The plot, set in 1964, revolves around Sister Aloysius, the principal of St. Nicholas Catholic School, who suspects that one of the priests may have molested a new student, a black boy who is the first person of color to enter the school. Her determination to protect the boy and elicit the truth from Father Flynn results in a clash of wills that threatens to consume them and those around them while undermining the very faith that they profess. The questions raised by the play are timely and a searing test of society's assumptions about right and wrong, certainty and doubt.
Seating is limited. Tickets are $5/$3 for seniors and students. Order by leaving a message at 712-749-2211, or the online form at www.bvu.edu/theatretickets.
