Capt. John J. Keegan, Commanding Officer of Surface Combat Systems Center (SCSCT), named OS2 (SW/AW) Dacia D. Cooley as SCSC's 2011 Junior Sailor of the Year just days prior to a promotion to First Class.

Petty Officer Cooley, a native of West Fargo, ND, daughter of Ron and Cindy (Sampers) Bertsch and granddaughter of Bob and Pam Sampers, Alta, joined the Navy in June 2004, completing boot camp and Operation Specialist "A" and "C" Schools. She has served in Yukosuja, Japan and in Atsugi, Japan, where she continued on her road to naval excellence.

Petty Officer Cooley was also selected as SCSC's Junior Sailor of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2011.

Capt. Keegan described her as a "model sailor" stating, "she has made good choices during her naval career and these good choices have driven her actions which have resulted in her excelling and being recognized for her excellence."

Cooley credits her personal motivation and dedication to doing her best to her continued success at SCSC and her naval career.

"My family always taught me to work hard and to do things to the best of my ability. My mother told me 'there are no roadblocks in life, just detours from your final destination. Be true to yourself and uphold the Navy's Core Values.'"

She currently resides in Skeeter Lane Housing with her husband, Phillip, and their dog, Gidget. They are expecting their first child in June.
