Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
Edward K. Groth was born on a farm in Douglas Township, Sac County, on Dec. 20, 1924. He attended country school thru the 8th grade, entered high school in Fonda and graduated in 1942. He met the love of his life his sophomore year and married Bernice Johnson in 1944. To this union were born: Dennis, Jim, Joanne, and Gaylen (still born).
Ed and Bernice farmed for 25 years, then started an insurance business while continuing to farm. Ed added real estate to the business and retired after 32 years. He served as mayor of Newell from 1974-1978 and was Director of Buena Vista Mutual for 32 years. Ed served as trustee and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Fonda where he attended since youth. When the church closed in 2007, he became a member of the First Congregation United Church of Christ.
Ed and Bernice loved to dance and followed the Jane Russell Band even as far away as Mesa, Ariz. Ed loved life and his family and enjoyed his many friends. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, and was known to tell a few stories in his lifetime. Bernice passed away in June of 2006.
In February of 2007, Ed married Violet Carlson Seagren. Together, they shared three beautiful years together. Violet passed away in February of 2010.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Dennis (Elaine) Groth of Newell; Joanne (Denny) Christian of Panora; stepdaughters: Linda (Don) Darling of Winterset; Nancy (Steve) Corkrean of Winterset; grandchildren: Gary Groth, Dr. Doug (Dr. Eva) Groth, Jill (Curtis) Cunningham, Dr. Nicolle (Eric) Rubendall, Mandy (Trevor) Shannon; step grandchildren: Jenny (Al) Ortiz, Matt (Beth) Christian, Matthew (Mindy) Darling, Jason (Nicole) Darling, and Jeff Corkrean; great grandchildren: Mike and Trevor Groth, Morgan and Taryn Groth, Jack and Max Cunningham; step great grandchildren: Easton and Avary Darling, Cole Darling, Trystin Cunningham, Alyssa, Al Jr., and Isabella Ortiz, Madison, Jordan, and KayAnna Christian; sister, Helen Widman of Fulda, Minn.; sister-in-law, Florence Groth; many nieces and nephews; extended family and many friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Ethyl; wife, Bernice; wife, Violet; sons, Jim and Gaylen; sisters, Matilda and Viola and one brother, Chris.
