Harlan Kies, age 60, of Newell, died Feb. 13, 2012 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 17, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial was in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Harlan Wayne Kies was born Sept. 25, 1951 in Ida Grove, the son of Harold and Arlene (Lussman) Kies. He was baptized on Oct. 14, 1951 at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, and later confirmed in 1965 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell.

Growing up, Harlan attended grade school in Newell where he graduated from Newell Providence in 1969. Following high school graduation, he attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge.

On Feb. 14, 1976 Harlan was united in marriage to Sandra Lynch in Albert City. Together, they were blessed with five children: Jamie, Melissa, Pam, Brandon, and Travis.

Harlan was a lifelong farmer and trucker. He had a passion for driving the tour bus for Buena Vista University basketball games. In his spare time, he enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. Harlan treasured spending time with his family and friends and will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and quick smile.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sandra Kies of Newell; children: Jamie Kies of Newell; Melissa (Tom) Payne of Mason City; Pam (Corey) Manary of Tiffin; Brandon (Jessie) Kies of Spencer; Travis (Hanna) Kies of Mason City; grandchildren: Samantha and Haley Kies; Colton and Lexi Payne; Tayah and Caydren Manary; brothers: Francis (Carolyn) Kies of Storm Lake; Alan (Dana) Kies of Tacoma, Wash.; Ken (Carol) Kies of Newell; Russ (Donna) Kies of Fonda; sisters: Violet (Jack) Thraen of Omaha, Neb.; Gladys (Gene) Mandernach of Lakeside; nieces; nephews; extended family and many friends.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Arlene Kies.
