John R. Rasmussen, age 84, of Albert City, died Jan. 13, 2012 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City at a later date. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

John Robert Rasmussen, the son of Elmer and Veronica (McCoy) Rasmussen, was born in Des Moines, on Sept. 24, 1927. He attended All Saints and Visitation Grade School and was a graduate of Dowling High School in Des Moines.

John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945, and attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where he was training to be a pilot before being honorably discharged in 1946. John returned to Iowa to attend Iowa State University in Ames where he graduated in 1950 with a degree in Agronomy.

John was united in marriage to Helen Miller on July 1, 1950. Together, they were blessed with six children.

John and Helen moved to Albert City where John was a Veteran's Instructor from 1950 to 1960. He taught the returning Korean War veterans and others, farming techniques. John then started Farm Automation Company in Albert City and Sioux Rapids, selling feed automated equipment.

John was a long time parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina and Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Laurens, where he served many years with the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening and took up beekeeping the last several years, supplying honey to local residents. John loved just sitting in a lawn chair in the front yard, waving hello to friends and strangers alike that passed by and enjoyed anyone who stopped by to visit.

John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Helen W. of Albert City, as well as their six children and spouses: Stephen (Sidney) Rasmussen of Lilburn, Ga.; Teresa (Roger) Pierce of Burlington; David (Revellia) Rasmussen of Olathe, Kan.; Mary (Bruce) Case of Monument, Colo.; Monica (Jerry) Stone of Springfield, Ill.; and Mark (Michele) Rasmussen of Lilburn, Ga.; along with his 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard "Dick" Rasmussen of Chamblee, Ga.; two sisters: Mary-Ann Wahl of Des Moines; Virginia Barton of Orlando, Fla.; other extended family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Veronica and Elmer Rasmussen; and his brother, Father James Rasmussen.
